AWEtober Art Auction/Fundraiser

Published over 1 year ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader,

I can’t believe that not only is the summer over but we are in October. I do love the beginning of fall as a chance to reset the year and start new. It is like a mini-new year.

For our friends in Florida, I hope you and your loved ones are safe.

I got this email from Shirley Ng-Benitez about the 3rd annual AWEtober Art Auction and Fundraiser. Here are her own words:

I wanted to share @AWEtober on Instagram the 3rd annual art auction/fundraiser event raising $ for victims of the CA wildfires, and coral reef restoration efforts around the globe. AWEtober started in 2020 when the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fires (the 2nd largest fire in US history) burned down my sister-in-law and firefighter husband’s home in Bonny Doon. It was the first time I'd run through our home determining which items were “most important” as our family had to pre-evacuate. It was incredibly awful, and as each wildfire season comes and goes, the stress bubbles up, so moving that energy to AWEtober has given me back so much knowing that collectively we are all helping people, animals, redwoods, and the ocean’s creatures each year. The many participants through the years have not only created new work, but have donated their time and have paid for shipping for all of their auction items. Truly, it’s inspiring to witness the generosity of the participants, the bidders, and the winners, and it’s also super fun and there’s so many great items to come!
Of note, my agent, Ammi-Joan Paquette of EMLA will be offering a QUERY PASS to the agency, and Amy Novesky of Cameron Kids/Abrams, and Meg Fleming are offering PB MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUES. Their auctions will appear on the@AWEtober IG feed.

HOW TO BID? Please follow @AWEtober on Instagram(61 auctions will run on each individual’s Instagram accounts, while 3 will run on the AWEtober IG account)

Hi, Reader, My new middle grade graphic novel UNHAPPY CAMPER releases today!! I wrote it during the first few months of 2020. Leaving the house every day to cross the driveway to enter my campervan, I worked on this story of two sisters, one who embraces her Taiwanese culture and one who realized very early on that to fit in is to reject her cultural heritage. Writing this story was my anchor. And, now Ann Xu who also illustrated MEASURING UP was kind enough to bring her brilliance to UNHAPPY...

Hi, Reader, I’d heard my author friends talk about going to school visits and book festivals. It all sounded so exciting. Definitely something I had been jazzed about doing one day when I'd finally be published. But then Measuring Up released in October 2020 during the first year of the pandemic. I did a panel for the NY ComicCon but it was virtual. I did a panel for the Texas Book Festival but it was virtual. I did many, many school visits but they were all virtual. You can imagine how very...

Hi, Reader, Lucien and I had the most amazing whirlwind trip of a lifetime. It started out as a trip to the SLAM Festival in Tampa, FL. And, then the BAM Festival in West Palm Beach, FL asked me to go. Of course, I had to say yes. Then a school and library in Lewiston, ME asked for an author visit. We were driving from Florida to Montreal to visit my son, so of course, I had to say yes. Then the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival in the United Arab Emirates asked me. The UAE! So of course I...
