Book Cover Reveal Chloe’s Lunar New Year and Shoutouts to Suma and Kristin

Published over 1 year ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader,

I’m so happy to share the book cover for my debut picture book Chloe’s Lunar New Year which hits the shelves on January 3, 2023. I worked through several revise and resubmits with my fabulous editor Clarissa Wong (she generously gave me several revision opportunities) and continued with my equally wonderful current editor Alyson Day.

I love Michelle Lee’s cover, end papers, and interiors. Her illustrations are as warm, cozy, and joyous as I had envisioned when writing the manuscript about Chloe and her family celebrating Reunion Dinner on Lunar New Year’s Eve while bringing her A-má’s presence to this special holiday.

I’m doing a book launch at Red Balloon in St. Paul, MN on Saturday, January 7 at 6:30 pm CT and at Brick and Mortar Books in Redmond, WA on Saturday, January 14 at 2 pm PT. There will also be a social media giveaway with Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, WA. Perhaps I’ll see you there.

I also want to give a shoutout to my critique group friends Kristin Thorsness who signed with her new agent a couple of weeks ago and to Suma Subramaniam whose debut picture book Namaste is a Greeting came out this week. It is such a joy to see Suma’s heartwarming manuscript hit the shelves!

I am a huge supporter of libraries so I want to let you know about signing an e-card to Sen. Reed and Rep. Grijalva. They introduced the Right to Read Act to expand access to school libraries nationwide. According to ALA: We need 5000 signatures to show them ALA has their back as this legislation moves forward!

I signed and it was very quick and easy. Do it for the kids!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Hi, Reader, Huge thanks to readers who came to my book release at Third Place Books on Tuesday. It was joyful to see so many faces and then hang out afterwards. Diana Ma is a wonderful conversation partner asking such good questions and bringing her own experiences to the dialogue. Now, I’m on my way to South Bay for my book events on Saturday with Hicklebee’s in San Jose, CA and then to Linden Tree in Los Altos, CA. Here’s the updated book events list with one correction and one add: Indie...

Hi, Reader, My new middle grade graphic novel UNHAPPY CAMPER releases today!! I wrote it during the first few months of 2020. Leaving the house every day to cross the driveway to enter my campervan, I worked on this story of two sisters, one who embraces her Taiwanese culture and one who realized very early on that to fit in is to reject her cultural heritage. Writing this story was my anchor. And, now Ann Xu who also illustrated MEASURING UP was kind enough to bring her brilliance to UNHAPPY...

Hi, Reader, I’d heard my author friends talk about going to school visits and book festivals. It all sounded so exciting. Definitely something I had been jazzed about doing one day when I'd finally be published. But then Measuring Up released in October 2020 during the first year of the pandemic. I did a panel for the NY ComicCon but it was virtual. I did a panel for the Texas Book Festival but it was virtual. I did many, many school visits but they were all virtual. You can imagine how very...
